According to local media, the majority of the government job quotas that sparked student-led protests and resulted in at least 114 deaths were lifted by Bangladesh’s Supreme Court on Sunday.
The Appellate Division of the court overturned a prior lower court finding that had reinstated the quotas, directing that applications for 93% of government posts be examined entirely on merit, free of quotas.
The quota system was abolished by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s administration in 2018, but a lower court reinstated it this month, resulting in protests and a government crackdown.
